Cason Murphy writes what it was like to go
into the recording studio for the first time to record a cast album
Having never even set foot anywhere near, let
alone in, a professional recording studio, the entire experience recording "The
Brain From Planet X" was just pretty much astounding. I had set my expectations
high, but the whole evening shattered them completely. Being able to stand there
and capture the fun that we all had on stage was such a thrill. Everything just
seemed to kick up into that professional setting -- hearing Larry's fantastic
orchestrations, laying down all the tracks, even using just my feet to create a
veritable army of tappers -- it was just a surreal event. The technology boggles
my mind -- being able to just record snippets here and snippets there until you
get exactly what you want - I don't think my heart rate ever went below 100 the
whole time! Ha! Hopefully it won't be my last trip to a studio...
On
the creation of his new musical Kimmel says: "'The Brain From Planet X' is a
sci-fi musical, one that has sport with all my favorite bad sci-fi films of the
50s, which include 'Invaders From Mars,' 'The Brain From Planet Arous,' 'Plan
Nine From Outer Space,' and 'The Creeping Terror' (which features the first
monster entirely made out of carpet), and so many other fine works of cinema. I
grew up loving those movies, and I love them still, and now through the magic of
musical comedy, I'm getting to relive them all. We have an actual singing
Brain, we have two aliens named Zubrick and Yoni (Yoni being the man-hungry
female, and Zubrick being the man-hungry male), we have an All-American Family,
we have a General, we have an elderly Professor, we have 17 musical numbers and,
best of all, the show is set in the San Fernando Valley in 1958."
