REVIEWS
Michelle Nicastro's new album On My Own is her first adult album, having previously recorded three successful children's albums for Bruce Kimmel (Toonful, Reel Imagination, and Toonful Too). The best description that I can come up with is "sunny". I've been using the adjective "sunny" a lot recently, usually to describe music that makes me happy (After seeing a recent performance of Britten's Death in Venice, I can perhaps be forgiven for wanting to listen to non-gloomy music). If that cover photo doesn't move albums, I'll eat my hat. I respect the fact that many of the songs she sings are going to appeal to a wider audience of younger theater fans (and I hope it sells like hotcakes!), but they're not really my kind of songs. Still, I like the Big and Steel Pier songs. My favorites are, perhaps unsurprisingly, the two Flaherty & Ahrens songs "Waiting for Life" and "The Human Heart" and the hidden track "Disneyland", from the flop Smile. Her "Seasons of Love" is certainly the best solo rendition I've heard. I also thought the back cover was really well designed: great photo and a nice typeface with the track numbers unobtrusively behind the track listings. I'll just add that my significant other, who usually only indulges my taste in music, actively likes this album. He has already begun proselytizing; he gave a copy to the show tune fan daughter of a co-worker. Bill http://www.mermania.com/ (originally on his mermaniac website)
